- <p>OH, THE PLACES YOU'LL GO!
- by Dr. Seuss
- Random House; $12.95
- </p>
- <qt>
- <l>The poetics are tight,</l>
- <l>and the drawings are loose</l>
- <l>in the forty-three books</l>
- <l>that are signed Dr. Seuss.</l>
-
- <l>In the days of the past</l>
- <l>he would merrily tell</l>
- <l>of the Grinch who took joy</l>
- <l>in purloining noel.</l>
-
- <l>Of the Cat in the Hat</l>
- <l>and recalcitrant Sam,</l>
- <l>who refused any meal</l>
- <l>made of Green Eggs and Ham.</l>
-
- <l>And of Horton and Sneetch</l>
- <l>and of Yertle and Who</l>
- <l>and of Thidwick the Moose</l>
- <l>and If I Ran the Zoo.</l>
-
- <l>Every Seusspenseful tale,</l>
- <l>every verse that he did,</l>
- <l>seemed to land on the bed</l>
- <l>or the lap of a kid.</l>
-
- <l>But the doctor of late</l>
- <l>has achieved his results</l>
- <l>by prescribing for those</l>
- <l>who are labeled adults.</l>
-
- <l>In The Lorax he chose</l>
- <l>as his overall theme</l>
- <l>the consumption that eats</l>
- <l>at the forest and stream.</l>
-
- <l>And the big Butter Battle</l>
- <l>Book spoke with a roar</l>
- <l>of the lunatic fringes</l>
- <l>who trigger a war.</l>
-
- <l>And You're Only Old Once!</l>
- <l>pulled the ultimate hat trick:</l>
- <l>making readers think twice</l>
- <l>about things geriatric.</l>
-
- <l>But the latest of Seuss</l>
- <l>fits in no category.</l>
- <l>Oh, the Places You'll Go!</l>
- <l>is an all-ages story</l>
-
- <l>Of the creature who wins</l>
- <l>after being a victim</l>
- <l>when it learns how to live</l>
- <l>by observing this dictum:</l>
-
- <l>Just "be sure when you step.</l>
- <l>Step with care and great tact</l>
- <l>and remember that Life's</l>
- <l>a Great Balancing Act."</l>
-
- <l>And recalling the thing</l>
- <l>left unsaid by the sage:</l>
- <l>that surprises may come</l>
- <l>on the very last page.</l>
-
- <l>Case in point, Seuss himself,</l>
- <l>who is now eighty-six.</l>
- <l>Moral: Who says you can't</l>
- <l>teach an old Doc new tricks?</l>
